No. 2-ranked Penn’s season came to an end at the Class 4-A Michigan City Semi-state as the Kingsmen were defeated by Kokomo, 58-57, on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Markus Burton led the Kingsmen with 27 points, and Joey Garwood scored 16 points.

Penn finishes the season with a 28-2 record.

No. 2-ranked Penn scored a Boys Basketball Program record 108 points as the Kingsmen blasted past No. 3-ranked Hammond Central, 108-70 in Class 4-A Michigan City Semi-state action on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Penn (28-1) advances to the Semi-state Championship Game to take on No. 5 Kokomo (23-4) at 8:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, March 18, 2023. Kokomo advanced by defeating Fort Wayne Wayne. Hammond Central is finished at 26-2, and Fort Wayne Wayne’s season ended with a 21-5 record.

Penn’s previous high for most points scored in a game was when the Kingsmen raced past New Prairie, 104-33, in high school action on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021.

Penn tied a record for most points scored in a Semi-state game, matching Michigan City Rogers’ output in a 108-82 victory against Concord in 1986.

Mr. Basketball Candidate Markus Burton scored 30 points and dished out five assists.

Joey Garwood contributed 25 points.

Mookie Ward scored 13 points, Joe Smith 11, Maverick Brown eight and Dylan Fey 6.

Penn hit 65 percent of its field-goal attempts, including a sizzling 21-of-29 in the second half (72 percent). The Kingsmen were 11-of-19 three-point shooting.
